RESUMO: A fasciolose bovina é uma zoonose parasitária negligenciada que resulta em perdas econômicas para a cadeia produtiva da carne devido à condenação de fígado em abatedouros-frigoríficos. Essa doença é descrita em diversas áreas do Brasil, mas existe uma deficiência de informações atuais sobre a prevalência nos estados do Rio de Janeiro e Espírito Santo. Essa nota descreve a prevalência de fasciolose de 2018 a 2021 de acordo com o município de origem e o impacto econômico devido à condenação de fígados em um abatedouro que recebe animais de ambos os estados. A prevalência no Estado do Espírito Santo (10,4%) foi significativamente maior do que no Rio de Janeiro (3,6%) (P < 0,01) e resultou em uma perda econômica de R$ 64.636,00. Os municípios de Vargem Alta, Anchieta, Cachoeiro do Itapemirim, Castelo, Atilio Vivacqua, Apiacá e Ibitirama apresentaram prevalência superior à prevalência desse estudo (10,3%), sendo que esses municípios vem sendo reconhecidos como áreas de alto risco. Apesar de uma aparente redução na prevalência da enfermidade, a fasciolose persiste como uma causa de perdas econômicas aos abatedouros, especialmente no Estado do Espírito Santo, e medidas profiláticas ainda precisam ser adotadas nas fazendas.

ABSTRACT: Bovine fasciolosis is a neglected parasitic zoonosis that causes economic losses to beef production chains due to liver condemnation at abattoirs. Despite the characterization of Bovine fasciolosis in several areas of Brazil, an update on its prevalence in the states of Rio de Janeiro and Espirito Santo is lacking. Thus, fasciolosis prevalence from 2018 to 2021 is presented here according to cattle origin (municipalities of both states). In addition, the associated economic impact on an abbatoir was analyzed through liver condemnation of bovines from both states. The prevalence of fasciolosis in the state of Espírito Santo (10.4%) was significantly higher than Rio de Janeiro (3.6%) (P < 0.01), and resulted in an economic loss of US$12,678.60 for the abattoir. The following municipalities located in the state of Espírito Santo presented prevalences above the mean (10.3%) established in the study: Vargem Alta, Anchieta, Cachoeiro do Itapemirim, Castelo, Atilio Vivacqua, Apiacá and Ibitirama. Thus, majority of these municipalities are considered high-risk areas. Although, there is an aparrent reduction of fasciolosis prevalence, it continues to be a cause of economic losses in abattoirs especially in the state of Espírito Santo. Accordingly, prophylactic measures must still be adopted in cattle farms.

RESUMO: A cisticercose bovina (CB) é uma doença importante no Brasil devido à sua detecção em abatedouros-frigoríficos que resulta em impactos econômicos aos criadores de bovinos, e um problema de saúde pública. Apesar da sua importância, o conhecimento sobre a sua epidemiologia e impacto persiste não completamente descritos em diversas áreas do país requer mais estudos. Portanto, esse estudo objetivou estabelecer a prevalência nos municípios e regiões do Estado do Espírito Santo de 2017 a 2019; estabelecer os fatores de risco associados; e estimar o impacto econômico aos pecuaristas. Durante o período, 2.330 casos de BC foram dectados entre os 407.529 bovinos inspecionados sob regime de inspeção federal (0,57%; I.C. 95% 0,55 - 0,60%), com maior frequência de cisticercos inviáveis (66,14%). Os pecuaristas perderam pelo menos US$153.000,20 devido à ocorrência de CB durante o período. As áreas de maior risco para a enfermidade nesse estado estão nas mesoregiões Metropolitana (OR = 9,19), Litoral Sul (OR = 7,77), Caparó (OR = 7,44), e Central Sul (OR = 7,19), respectivamente. A doença foi detectada em animais de 67 municípios e a prevalência da enfermidade foi maior em áreas com elevada densidade populacional humana (OR = 1,58; p = 0,01). Assim, conclui-se que a CB é uma importante doença para a cadeia da carne bovina no estado, além de uma importante causa de perdas econômicas, principalmente em algumas áreas, e necessita, urgentemente, da adoação de medidas profiláticas para reduzir a ocorrência desse parasita.

ABSTRACT: Bovine cysticercosis (BCC) is an important disease in Brazil due to its detection in abattoirs, resulting in economic losses for cattle farmers, and a public health corcern. Besides its importance, the knowledge about BCC epidemiology and impact remains not fully described in several areas in this country, requiring more studies. Thus, this study focused on establishing BCC prevalence in the regions and municipalities of the state of Espírito Santo from 2017 to 2019, establishing the associated risk factors, and estimating the economic losses for cattle farmers. A set of 2,330 cases of BCC was detected in the 407,529 bovine inspected by Federal Inspection Service (0.57%; C.I. 95% 0.55 - 0.60%) with a higher detection of unviable cysticercus (66.14%). The beef producers lost at least US$153,000.20 due to BCC through this period. The highest risk for BCC infection occurred in Metropolitana (OR = 9.19), Litoral Sul (OR = 7.77), Caparó (OR = 7.44), and Central Sul (OR = 7.19) mesoregions, respectively. The BCC was detected in animals from 67 municipalities and its prevalence increased in areas with high human population density (OR = 1.58;; p = 0.01). In conclusion, BCC is an important disease for beef production chain in the Brazilian state of Espírito Santo and a cause of economic losses, mainly in some areas, and urgently requires the adoption of prophylactic strategies to reduce the ocurrence of this parasite.

Resumo O Bioverm® (Duddingtonia flagrans) é uma formulação fúngica indicada para o controle de nematódeos gastrintestinais de ruminantes e equídeos, recentemente autorizado para a comercialização no Brasil. Objetivou-se determinar a eficiência do Bioverm® contra larvas de nematódeos gastrintestinais após a passagem pelo trato gastrintestinal de bovinos. Foram utilizados doze bovinos divididos em dois grupos. No grupo tratado, foi fornecida, por animal, a dose única de 1g (105 clamidósporos de D. flagrans) do Bioverm® para cada 10 kg de peso vivo. Foram obtidas amostras fecais dos animais de cada grupo a partir de 12, 24, 36, 48, 60 e 72 horas após a administração. No ensaio A, 2g de fezes foram adicionadas em placas de Petri contendo meio ágar-água 2%. No ensaio B, foram realizadas coproculturas. Em ambos os ensaios, o pico de predação larval ocorreu em 48 horas após a administração do Bioverm®. No ensaio A, houve redução larval significativa (P<0,05) em 48h (88,2%). No ensaio B, as reduções significativas (P<0,05) ocorreram em 36h (43,7%) e 48h (82,3%). O Bioverm® apresentou elevada capacidade predatória após a passagem pelo trato gastrintestinal de bovinos, sendo eficaz no controle dos nematódeos gastrintestinais.

Abstract Bioverm® (Duddingtonia flagrans) is a fungal formulation indicated for controlling gastrointestinal nematodes in ruminants and horses, which has recently been authorized for commercialization in Brazil. The objective was to determine the efficiency of Bioverm® against larvae of gastrointestinal nematodes after passage through the gastrointestinal tract of cattle. Twelve animals were used, divided into two groups. In the treated group, a single dose of 1 g of Bioverm® per 10 kg of live weight (containing 105 chlamydospores of D. flagrans) was provided for each animal. Fecal samples were obtained from the animals in each group at 12, 24, 36, 48, 60 and 72 hours after administration. In assay A, 2 g of feces were added to Petri dishes containing 2% agar-water medium. In assay B, coprocultures were performed. In both assays, the peak of larval predation occurred within 48 hours after administration of Bioverm®. In assay A, a significant larval reduction (P < 0.05) was seen at 48 h (88.2%). In assay B, significant reductions (P < 0.05) were seen at 36 h (43.7%) and 48 h (82.3%). Bioverm® showed high predatory capacity after passage through the gastrointestinal tract of cattle and was effective for controlling gastrointestinal nematodes.

Resumo Os objetivos neste estudo foram descrever ocorrências do nematódeo Rhabditis spp., causando otite parasitária em bovinos leiteiros da raça Gir no estado do Espírito Santo, sudeste do Brasil, e avaliar o controle biológico desse nematódeo utilizando os fungos nematófagos Duddingtonia flagrans (AC001) e Monacrosporium thaumasium (NF34). Após a detecção e coleta dos nematódeos, três grupos foram formados: dois grupos que foram tratados com os isolados fúngicos, respectivamente; e um grupo controle, sem fungos. Os tratamentos foram os seguintes: (a) placas de Petri contendo o meio de cultura 2% ágar de água (WA) + 250 nematoides + AC001; (b) placas de Petri contendo 2% de WA + 250 nematoides + NF34; e (c) placas de contendo apenas 2% de nematódeos WA + 250. Após sete dias a 27 °C os tratamentos com fungos foram capazes de capturar e destruir os nematódeos, com porcentagens de 82,0% (AC001) e 39,0% (NF34) em relação ao grupo controle. Os resultados demonstram a ocorrência de Rhabditis spp., no Estado do Espírito Santo e a eficácia da atividade predatória in vitro dos isolados fúngicos utilizados. Assim, esses resultados são importantes, pois podem auxiliar no controle alternativo in vivo de Rhabditis spp. em bovinos com otite parasitária.

Abstract The objectives of this study were to describe occurrences of Rhabditis spp. causing parasitic otitis in dairy cattle of Gir breed in the state of Espírito Santo, southeastern Brazil, and to evaluate the biological control of this nematode using the nematophagous fungi Duddingtonia flagrans (AC001) and Monacrosporium thaumasium (NF34). After nematode detection and collection, three groups were formed: two groups that were treated, respectively, with the fungal isolates; and a control group, without fungus. The treatments were as follows: (a) Petri dishes containing the culture medium 2% water agar (WA) + 250 nematodes + AC001; (b) Petri dishes containing 2% WA + 250 nematodes + NF34; and (c) Petri dishes containing only 2% WA + 250 nematodes. After seven days at 27 °C the treatments with fungi were able to capture and destroy the nematodes, with percentages of 82.0% (AC001) and 39.0% (NF34) in relation to the control group. The results demonstrate the occurrence of Rhabditis spp. after animals physical examination and that there was efficacy of the in vitro predatory activity of both fungal isolates. Thus, these results are important because they can assist in future in vivo control of this nematode in cattle.

Resumo O objetivo foi avaliar a ação de péletes de Duddingtonia flagrans em associação ao Cloridrato de Levamisole 5% no controle de nematódeos gastrintestinais de ovinos no Nordeste do Brasil. Foram formados três grupos de seis animais cada: grupo 1 recebeu 3 g de péletes (0,6 g de micélio de D. flagrans) para cada 10 kg p.v., duaz vezes por semana durante seis meses, e vermifugações com Cloridrato de Levamisole 5% quando OPG > 1500; grupo 2 recebeu uma dosagem de Cloridrato de Levamisole 5% quando OPG ≥ 1500; e grupo 3 recebeu 3 g de péletes sem fungos para cada 10 kg de p.v., duas vezes por semana durante seis meses. Contagens de OPG, coproculturas, de volumes globulares (VG) e pesagens foram realizadas a cada 15 dias. Mensalmente, amostras de pasto de cada piquete eram coletadasa. A média de OPG dos grupos começou a diferir estatisticamente a partir do dia 30 (p < 0,05). O grupo 1 necessitou de menos vermifugações com Cloridrato de Levamisole 5% e demonstrou superioridade nos valores de VG durante todo o experimento (p < 0,05). Houve redução significativa (p < 0,05) nas L3 recuperadas no piquete do grupo 1 a partir do dia 30. Em conclusão, a utilização de péletes de D. flagrans em associação ao Cloridrato de Levamisole 5% foi eficaz no controle de nematódeos gastrintestinais de ovinos.

Abstract The objective was to evaluate the action of D. flagrans pellets in association with Levamisole Hydrochloride 5% for controlling sheep gastrointestinal nematodes in the northeastern Brazil. Three groups of six sheep each were formed: group 1 received 3 g of the pellets (0.6 g of D. flagrans mycelium) for each 10 kg b.w., twice a week for six months, and deworming with Levamisole Hydrochloride 5% when EPG ≥ 1500; group 2 received a dosage of Levamisole Hydrochloride 5% when EPG ≥ 1500; and group 3 received 3 g of pellets without fungi for each 10 kg b.w., twice a week for six months. EPG counts, larval cultures, packed cell volume (PCV) and weighing were performed every 15 days; monthly, samples of grass from each paddock were collected. The mean EPG of the groups began to statistically differ from day 30 (p < 0.05). Group 1 required less deworming with Levamisole Hydrochloride 5% and showed superiority of PCV values throughout the experiment (p < 0.05). There was a significant reduction (p < 0.05) in L3 recovery in the group 1 paddock from day 30 onwards. The use of D. flagrans pellets in association with Levamisole Hydrochloride 5% was effective for controlling gastrointestinal nematodes.

Resumo O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a atividade predatória do nematoide Butlerius spp. e isolados fúngicos de Duddingtonia flagrans, Clonostachys rosea, Arthrobotrys musiformis e Trichoderma esau contra larvas infectantes (L3) de Haemonchus contortus em vasos plantados com Panicum spp. Foram utilizados quarenta e oito potes plásticos de jardinagem contendo 140 g de solo estéril, 200 mg de sementes de Panicum spp.. Cultivar colonião, foi semeado em cada vaso e, diariamente, molhados com 10 mL de água da torneira. Doze dias após, os vasos foram divididos em 6 grupos (n = 8), e duas mil L3 de H. contortus foram adicionadas a cada vaso. Foram estabelecidos os seguintes tratamentos: Grupo 1 - 2.000 larvas de Butlerius spp.; Grupo 2 - A. musiformis (1x107 conídios); grupo 3 - T. esau (1x107 conídios); grupo 4 - C. rosea (1x107 conídios); grupo 5 - D. flagrans (1x107conidia); e Grupo 6 – somente L3 de H. contortus que serviu como controle negativo. A população de L3 de H. contortus expostas a Butlerius spp. foi reduzida em 61,9%. Redução populacional de 90,4, 66,7, 61,9 e 85,7% foram observadas nos vasos contendo A. musiformis, T. esau, C. rosea e D. flagrans, respectivamente. Os resultados deste estudo indicaram que o nematoide Butlerius spp. e os fungos avaliados exibiram importante atividade predatória e podem ser considerados como agentes de controle biológico.

Abstract The purpose of this study was to evaluate the predatory activity of the nematode Butlerius spp. and fungal isolates of Duddingtonia flagrans, Clonostachys rosea, Arthrobotrys musiformis and Trichoderma esau against H. contortus infective larvae (L3) in grass pots. Forty-eight plastic gardening pots containing 140 g of sterile soil were used. Panicum spp. grass seeds (200 mg) were sown into each pot and individually watered with 10 mL of tap water. Twelve days after seeding, the pots were randomly divided into 6 groups (n=8). Two thousand H. contortus infective larvae (L3) were added to each group. Additionally, the following treatments were established: Group 1 – 2000 Butlerius spp. larvae; group 2 – A. musiformis (1x107 conidia); group 3 – T. esau (1x107 conidia); group 4 – C. rosea (1x107 conidia), group 5 – D. flagrans (1x107conidia) and Group 6 – no biological controller (control group). The larval population of H. contortus exposed to Butlerius spp. was reduced by 61.9%. Population reductions of 90.4, 66.7, 61.9 and 85.7% were recorded in the pots containing A. musiformis, T. esau, C. rosea and D. flagrans, respectively. The results of this study indicate that the predatory nematode Butlerius spp. and the assessed fungi display an important predatory activity can be considered suitable potential biological control agents.

ABSTRACT The present study aimed to evaluate the action of Paecilomyces marquandii proteases on Ancylostoma spp L3. White halos in the zymogram confirmed the proteolytic action. Difference (p <0.01) between the number of L3 in the differents groups was found, with 41.4% of reduction of Ancylostoma spp. L3 before 24 hours.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi otimizar a produção de proteases do fungo nematófago Monacrosporium thaumasium (NF34a), avaliar sua atividade larvicida e sua estabilidade biológica. Foi utilizado um isolado do fungo nematófago Monacrosporium thaumasium (NF34a) para a produção de enzima. O delineamento Plackett-Burman foi utilizado com o objetivo de se escanear quais componentes do meio de cultura, poderiam ter influência significava na produção de protease pelo fungo NF34a. Foi realizado um ensaioin vitro para avaliar a atividade larvicida de NF34a. Observou-se que apenas um dos componentes do meio de cultura (extrato de levedura), nos níveis avaliados, apresentou um efeito significativo (p < 0,05) sobre a produção de protease. Houve reducão (p < 0,01) entre as médias de larvas recuperadas dos grupos tratados em relação ás dos grupos controle. Os resultados confirmam trabalhos anteriores da eficiência de fungos nematófagos no controle de larvas de nematóides potencialmente zoonóticos. Assim, devido á importãncia do controle biológico, os autores sugerem estudos mais aprofundados sobre a protease produzida pelo fungo Monacrosporium thaumasium.

The objectives of this study were to optimize protease production from the nematophagous fungus Monacrosporium thaumasium (NF34a) and evaluate its larvicidal activity and biological stability. An isolate of the nematophagous fungus Monacrosporium thaumasium (NF34a) was used to produce the enzyme. The Plackett-Burman design was used in order to scan which components of the culture medium could have a significant influence on protease production by the fungus NF34a. An in vitro assay was also performed to evaluate the larvicidal activity of NF34a. It was observed that only one component of the culture medium (yeast extract), at the levels studied, had any significant effect (p < 0.05) on protease production. There was a reduction (p < 0.01) in the mean number of larvae recovered from the treated groups, compared with the control groups. The results confirm previous reports on the efficiency of nematophagous fungi for controlling nematode larvae that are potentially zoonotic. Thus, given the importance of biological control, we suggest that further studies should be conducted on the protease produced by the fungus Monacrosporium thaumasium.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi estudar a ação do extrato bruto de Duddingtonia flagrans (isolados AC001 e CG722) sobre larvas infectantes (L3) de ciatostomíneos em coproculturas e confirmar a sua atividade proteolítica por meio de um zimograma. Foram formados os seguintes grupos em coproculturas: grupo 1: 10 mL de extrato bruto de D. flagrans (AC001); grupo 2: 10 mL de extrato bruto de AC001 com íons Ca2+ 10 Mm; grupo 3: 10 mL de extrato bruto de D. flagrans (CG722); grupo 4: 10 mL de extrato bruto de CG722 com íons Ca2+ 10 Mm; e grupo 5 como controle (água destilada), obtendo-se as L3 ao final de 8 dias. O extrato bruto de D. flagrans foi eficiente na redução do número de L3 com os seguintes percentuais de redução: grupo 1 (49,5%); grupo 2 (52,5%); grupo 3 (36,8%) e grupo 4 (57,7%) em relação ao grupo controle (p > 0,05). Confirmou-se a atividade proteolítica por meio do zimograma. Os resultados do presente trabalho confirmam a utilização do extrato bruto do fungo D. flagrans no controle de L3de ciatostomíneos e sugere a presença de pelo menos uma protease de aproximadamente 38 kDa.

The objective of this study was to examine the action of the crude extract of Duddingtonia flagrans (isolates AC001 and CG722) on infective larvae (L3) of cyathostomins in coprocultures and to confirm its proteolytic activity by means of a zymogram. The following groups were formed in coprocultures: Group 1: 10 mL of crude extract of D. flagrans (AC001); group 2: 10 mL of crude extract of AC001 with 10 mM of Ca2+; group 3: 10 mL of crude extract of D. flagrans (CG722); group 4: 10 mL of crude extract of CG722 with 10 mM of Ca2+; and group 5: control group (distilled water). The third-stage larvae (L3) were obtained after eight days. The crude extract of D. flagrans was effective in reducing the number of L3, with the following percentage reductions: group 1, 49.5%; group 2, 52.5%; group 3, 36.8%; and group 4, 57.7%; in relation to the control group (p > 0.05). The proteolytic activity of the crude extract was confirmed through the zymogram. The results from this study confirmed that the crude extract of the fungusD. flagrans could be used for controlling cyathostomin L3, and suggested that at least one protease of approximately 38 kDa was present.

Libyostrongylus douglassii é um nematóide parasito gastrintestinal de avestruzes que pode causar até 50% de mortalidade em aves jovens. O objetivo deste trabalho foi comparar a capacidade predatória de dois isolados de fungos predadores Duddingtonia flagrans (isolados AC001 e CG722) e umArthrobotrys cladodes (CG719) sobre larvas infectantes (L3) de L. douglassii em condições laboratoriais, em meio ágar–água 2%. Os resultados demonstraram que os fungos testados foram eficientes em predar as L3 de L. douglassii (P < 0,05) em relação ao grupo controle. Contudo, não foi observada nenhuma diferença na capacidade predatória entre os fungos testados (P > 0,05) durante os sete dias do ensaio experimental. Em comparação ao controle, sem fungo, houve uma redução significativa (P < 0,05) de 85,2% (AC001); 81,2% (CG722) e 89,2% (C719) na média de L3 recuperadas nas placas do grupo tratado com os isolados testados. No presente trabalho, os três isolados de fungos predadores D. flagrans (AC001 e CG722) e A. cladodes (CG719) foram eficientes na destruição in vitro das L3 deL. douglassii.

Libyostrongylus douglassii is a gastrointestinal nematode parasite of ostriches that can cause up to 50% mortality in young birds. The objective of this study was to compare the predatory capacity of two isolates of the predatory fungi Duddingtonia flagrans(AC001 and CG722 isolates) and one of Arthrobotrys cladodes (CG719) on infective larvae (L3) of L. douglassii under laboratory conditions, in 2% water-agar medium. The results showed that the fungi tested were effective in preying upon the L3 of L. douglassii (P < 0.05), compared with the control group. However, there was no difference in predatory capacity between the fungi tested (P > 0.05) during the seven days of experimental testing. In comparison with the control, without fungus, there were significant decreases (P < 0.05) of 85.2% (AC001), 81.2% (CG722) and 89.2% (CG719) in the average numbers of L3 of L. douglassii recovered from treatments with the isolates tested. In the present study, the three isolates of the predatory fungi D. flagrans (AC001 and CG722) andA. cladodes (CG719) were efficient at in vitro destruction of the L3 of L. douglassii.

No presente estudo, foi avaliado o efeito de diferentes fungos nematófagos [Duddingtonia flagrans (AC001 e CG722) eMonacrosporium thaumasium (NF34)] no controle de larvas infectantes (L3) de nematóides após o trânsito gastrointestinal em fêmeas bovinas (3/4 Holandês x Zebu). Um total de 24 fêmeas bovinas pubescentes foram utilizadas, pesando aproximadamente 320 kg cada. Foram utilizados três grupos de tratamento; cada um contendo seis animais que receberam por via oral de 150 g de péletes (0,2 g de micélio), em dose única, em uma matriz de alginato de sódio contendo massa micelial dos fungos D. flagrans (AC001 ou CG722), M. thaumasium (NF34), além de um grupo controle (sem fungo). Amostras de fezes foram colhidas dos animais em intervalos de 12, 15, 18, 21, 24, 48 e 72 horas. No final de 17 dias, as L3 não predadas foram recuperadas pelo método de Baermann. Os isolados de fungos testados foram capazes de destruir as L3 após trânsito gastrointestinal. Observou-se após 72 horas, os isolados AC001, CG722 e NF34 mostraram uma maior atividade predatória (81,2%, 97,3% e 98,3%, respectivamente). Estes resultados justificam a necessidade de estudos a campo e em intervalos mais longos, a fim de observar a eficácia dos fungos D. flagrans ou mesmoM. thaumasium no controle ambiental dos nematóides de bovinos naturalmente infectados.

The effect of different nematophagous fungi [Duddingtonia flagrans (AC001 and CG722) and Monacrosporium thaumasium (NF34)] with regard to controlling infective larvae (L3) of nematodes after gastrointestinal transit in female cattle (3/4 Holstein × Zebu) was evaluated. A total of 24 pubescent female cattle were used, weighing approximately 320 kg each one. There were three treatment groups, each contained six animals that received 150 g of pellets (0.2 g of mycelium), orally in a single dose, in a sodium alginate matrix containing mycelial mass of the fungus D. flagrans (AC001 or CG722) or M. thaumasium (NF34); and one control group (without fungi). Fecal samples were collected from the animals at intervals of 12, 15, 18, 21, 24, 48, and 72 hours. At the end of 17 days, the L3 not subjected to predation were recovered by means of the Baermann method. The fungal isolates tested were capable of destroying the L3 after gastrointestinal transit. It was observed that within 72 hours, the isolates AC001, CG722, and NF34 showed a higher predatory activity (81.2%, 97.3%, and 98.3%, respectively). The results justify the need for studies in the field, and over longer intervals, in order to observe the efficiency of the fungus D. flagrans, or even M. thaumasium, for environmental control over nematodes in naturally infected cattle.

O objetivo do trabalho foi utilizar clamidósporos do fungoPochonia chlamydosporia (isolados VC1 e VC4) na destruição de ovos de Toxocara canis, num ensaioin vitro, realizado no intervalo de 15 dias. Em cada placa de Petri com ágar-água 2% foram vertidos 1.000 ovos deT. canis em 1.000, 10.000 ou 100.000 clamidósporos de cada isolado do fungo (grupos tratados). Foram realizadas as contagens para verificar a atividade ovicida, classificada em três níveis de efeito: tipo 1, tipo 2 e tipo 3. Os resultados demonstraram que houve diferença significativa (P < 0,01) na destruição dos ovos em relação aos ovos observados nas placas do grupo controle. O maior percentual de ovos destruídos foi observado nas placas contendo 100.000 clamidósporos (68,5% para VC1 e 70,5% para VC4). Clamidósporos do fungo P. chlamydosporia foram efetivos na destruição dos ovos de T. canis podendo contribuir no futuro para o combate aos ovos deste parasito.

The objective of this study was to use chlamydospores of the fungusPochonia chlamydosporia (isolates VC1 and VC4) against Toxocara canis eggs in a 15-day in vitro assay. One thousand T. canis eggs were placed in Petri dishes containing 2% water agar medium with different concentrations of chlamydospores (1,000, 10,000 or 100,000) of each fungal isolate of P. chlamydosporia (treated groups) and 1,000 eggs in Petri dishes without fungus (control group). Egg counts were performed to determine the ovicidal activity, which was classified as three effect levels: type 1, type 2 and type 3. Significant differences (P < 0.01) in egg destruction were found in comparison with the control group. The highest percentage of egg destruction was found in plates containing 100,000 chlamydospores (68.5% for VC1 and 70.5% for VC4). Chlamydospores of P. chlamydosporiawere effective in destroying T. canis eggs and may contribute in the future towards combating the eggs of this parasite.

INTRODUCTION: Angiostrongylus vasorum is a nematode that parasitizes molluscs, dogs, and even man. METHODS: The objective was to evaluate the predatory activity of the conidia of two fungal isolates of Duddingtonia flagrans (AC001 and CG722) on first-stage larvae (L1) of A. vasorum in laboratory conditions. RESULTS: At the end of the experiment, there were significant reductions (p<0.01) of 74.5% and 63.2%, on average, in the A. vasorum L1 recovered in the AC001 and CG722 treatment conditions, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: The two isolates of fungi were efficient in the capture and destruction of A. vasorum L1.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a atividade predatória do fungo Duddingtonia flagrans (AC001) sobre larvas infectantes de Ancylostoma ceylanicum após o trânsito gastrintestinal em hamsters. Foram utilizados vinte animais no experimento, divididos em dois grupos: um grupo tratado (10 animais) e um grupo controle (10 animais). No grupo tratado com D. flagrans, cada animal recebeu 5mg/25g de peso vivo de micélio do isolado AC001, por via oral. Para avaliar a atividade predatória do fungo, amostras fecais foram coletadas de ambos os grupos de animais nos horários de: 6, 8, 12, 24 e 36 após o tratamento. A seguir, 2g de fezes foram colocadas em placas de Petri contendo o meio de cultura ágar-água 2% (AA2%) e 1000 L3 de A. ceylanicum. Ao longo dos horários estudados os seguintes percentuais de redução foram observados: 43,2% (6 horas); 30,8% (8 horas); 25,8% (12 horas); 30% (24 horas) e 11% (36 horas). O fungo D. flagrans (AC001) apresentou atividade predatória sobre as L3 de A. ceylanicum após o trânsito pelo trato gastrintestinal de hamsters. Além disso, foi observada uma diferença significativa nos percentuais obtidos de cada horário em relação ao numero de L3 recuperadas (P < 0,01). Conclui-se, portanto, que o fungo D. flagrans pode ser uma alternativa de controle biológico das L3 de A. ceylanicum.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the predatory activity of the fungus Duddingtonia flagrans (AC001) on infective larvae of Ancylostoma ceylanicum after gastrointestinal transit in hamsters. Twenty animals were used in the experiment, divided into two groups: a treated group (10 animals) and a control group (10 animals). In the group treated with D. flagrans, each animal received mycelium from the AC001 isolate, at an oral dose of 5 mg/25 g of live weight. To evaluate the predatory activity of the fungus, fecal samples were collected from the animals in both groups, at the times of 6, 8, 12, 24 and 36 hours after the treatment. Then, subsamples of 2 g of feces were placed in Petri dishes containing 2% water-agar (2% WA) culture medium and 1000 L3 of A. ceylanicum. Over the study period, the following percentage reductions were observed: 43.2% (6 hours), 30.8% (8 hours), 25.8% (12 hours), 30% (24 hours) and 11% (36 hours). The fungus D. flagrans presented predatory activity on the L3 of A. ceylanicum, after passing through the hamsters' gastrointestinal tract. It was therefore concluded that the fungus D. flagrans may be an alternative for biological control of the L3 of A. ceylanicum.

O Strongyloides westeri é o nematóide de maior prevalência entre equídeos com idade até quatro meses, causando distúrbios gastrintestinais. O objetivo do presente trabalho foi observar o controle de larvas infectantes (L3) de Strongyloides westeri pelos fungos nematófagos Duddingtonia flagrans (AC001) e Monacrosporium thaumasium (NF34) após trânsito gastrintestinal em jumentas. Foram utilizadas 12 jumentas, estabuladas e previamente vermifugadas. A seguir, dois grupos tratados, contendo cada um 4 animais receberam por via oral 100 g de péletes em matriz de alginato de sódio, contendo massa miceliana dos fungos D. flagrans (AC001) ou M. thaumasium (NF34). O grupo controle foi constituído de 4 animais que receberam péletes sem fungo. A seguir, amostras de fezes dos grupos de animais foram coletadas em distintos intervalos de horas (12, 24, 48 e 72). Essas fezes foram vertidas em placas de Petri contendo meio sólido ágar-água 2% e 1000 L3 de S. westeri. Os isolados AC001 e NF34 apresentaram capacidade de destruir as L3 após o trânsito, demonstrando sua viabilidade e atividade predatória.

Strongyloides westeri is the most prevalent nematode among equines aged up to four months and causes gastrointestinal disorders. The objective of this study was to observe the control of infective S. westeri larvae (L3) by the nematophagous fungi Duddingtonia flagrans (AC001) and Monacrosporium thaumasium (NF34) after passage through the gastrointestinal tract of female donkeys. Twelve dewormed female donkeys that were kept in stables were used. Two treatment groups each comprising four animals received orally 100 g of pellets made of sodium alginate matrix containing a mycelial mass of either D. flagrans (AC001) or M. thaumasium (NF34). The control group consisted of four animals that received pellets without fungus. Feces samples were then collected from the animal groups at different times (after 12, 24, 48 and 72 hours). These feces were placed in Petri dishes containing 2% water-agar medium and 1000 L3 of S. westeri. AC001 and NF34 isolates showed the ability to destroy the L3, after gastrointestinal transit, thus demonstrating their viability and predatory activity.
